the Hat

Here's a silly little post.

This is a picture of a hat.

It looks like a straw hat that resembles the shape of a type of hat I think they call the trilby. Actually it's the most fake hat I think I've ever owned. It's mostly just glued together plastic but it does its job and isn't too hot. I bought this hat at out of necessity and without giving it a second thought.

I was in Prague in August 2015 and immediately after arriving – during probably the hottest time of the year – I realised I didn't have anything to cover my head from the sun. Luckily (and obviously) there were a lot of stands around town selling scarfs, sunglasses and hats. I can't remember if it was the first vendor we stumbled upon but I can remember it didn't take long to find this particular hat. I bought it and wore it for the whole trip. It might be the best hat I ever owned.

It's not just the hat in the picture. The hat is lying on top of a black plastic bag. Inside the bag is a bunch of other clothing I don't care so much about but they are all going to be either donated or recycled. The reason I wanted to save a picture of the hat is because it's been with me on so many trips, hikes and little adventures throughout the years – not just in Prague. I've always made a point of wearing it when it felt appropriate. Now however, it's time to move on.

In about a week I'm leaving for the Netherlands and I'm taking with me just a couple of bags of necessities. The hat is going somewhere else. I left it at the local collection point for clothing donations earlier today.

I have a habit of getting too attached to things but sometimes you just have to let go. Trash is trash but with usable things I always wish that someone somewhere needs them and gets use out of them or that they are recycled and made into something more useful. I hope that something along those lines happens with this hat.

Goodbye hat.

Thanks for protecting me from the heat of the sun and the sting of mosquitoes.
